Located in the trans-Himalayan area of Nepal, Upper Mustang was once a restricted region due to its proximity to the Tibetan border, but it has gradually opened to visitors, while still retaining its rich cultural heritage and isolation. This tour offers an incredible blend of dramatic landscapes, ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, and a sense of stepping back in time.

Upper Mustang is basically upper northern part of Mustang district which occupies two third of Mustang to northern area bordered with Tibet. The history of Mustang is amazing since it was an independent kingdom, also called Lo, until it fell to Gorkha Empire (later Kathmandu) in 1795. As per archeological evidence, there are only two geographical locations which have continuous civilization for the last two thousand years. The 55 caves found in Mustang depicting the life of Buddha and current Lo Manthang palace existing since the last several centuries provide sufficient evidence to such claim.

Lying in the rain shadow of Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri, the region best invites its visitors during rainy season in Nepal. The region is typically known for its desert beauty and harsh, cliff faced landscapes. Since this remote Trans Himalayan Mountain area is bordered with Tibet, it has a distinct Tibetan feel both in its people and culture while lower part of Mustang has an amalgamation of both Tibetan and Nepalese culture. Upper Mustang is one of the most protected areas in the world and hence has been declared a restricted zone to preserve its organic culture and landscapes by the government of Nepal. Hiking through the trails of Upper Mustang means not only to enjoy and explore a hidden treasure on earth but also exploring many centuries’ old ancient civilizational cultures and many more.

The trip literally starts with your arrival in Kathmandu followed by next day’s Kathmandu valley’s major UNESCO World Heritage Sites and subsequent day’s drive to Pokhara. While staying overnight at beautiful lake city of Pokhara, we will catch an early flight to Jomsom next morning and trek down to Kagbeni, a gateway to Upper Mustang. Completing our security formalities, we will walk through stark landscape in the rain shadow of Dhaulagiri Massif to Lo Manthang, the capital of kingdom of Lo. We will explore an archeological and cultural sites such as caves, paintings, monasteries and gombas.

The trip will become much more exciting when you see a panoramic views of majestic peaks of Nilgiri, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayas. A few hours walk will take us to Lo Gyakar Gomba/Ghar Gomba which was built in 8th century by Guru Padmasabhv. This Gomba is also featured for its rock paintings.

The trail itself has many religious landmarks including Chortens, Mani walls, ruins of ancient palace and many more. And obviously we will not miss any single pristine scenery while walking back via these village route. The region is characterized by barren cliffs, eroded canyons, and wind-swept valleys, creating a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

Rich Cultural Heritage:

Upper Mustang is deeply influenced by Tibetan culture, as it lies close to the Tibet-Nepal border. The region is dotted with ancient monasteries, chortens (stupas), and mani walls (stone walls inscribed with Buddhist prayers), offering a fascinating insight into Tibetan Buddhism.

Less Crowded:

Due to its restricted area status (a special permit is required), Upper Mustang sees fewer trekkers compared to popular routes like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking solitude and tranquility.

Historical Significance:

The region was once part of the ancient Salt Trade Route between Tibet and Nepal. The trek takes you through villages that have preserved their medieval charm, offering a glimpse into a bygone era.

Key Highlights of the Upper Mustang Trek

Lo Manthang – The Walled City:

The capital of Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang, is a fortified city surrounded by a massive wall. It is home to ancient monasteries, royal palaces, and traditional Tibetan-style houses. The city feels like stepping back in time.

Ancient Caves and Monasteries:

The region is famous for its mysterious caves, such as the Chhoser Cave and Luri Gompa, which are carved into cliffs and adorned with ancient Buddhist murals. Monasteries like Thubchen Gompa and Jampa Gompa are architectural marvels with rich religious significance.

Tiji Festival:

If you time your trek right (usually in May), you can witness the vibrant Tiji Festival, a three-day celebration of Tibetan Buddhist culture featuring masked dances, rituals, and music.

Stunning Mountain Views:

The trek offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, as well as the Nilgiri and Tilicho peaks. The contrast between the arid landscape and snow-capped peaks is mesmerizing.

Traditional Villages:

Villages like Kagbeni, Chele, and Ghami are steeped in history and culture. These settlements feature whitewashed houses, prayer flags, and terraced fields, providing a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the Mustangi people.

Barley Fields and Apple Orchards:

Despite the arid environment, the region is known for its fertile barley fields and apple orchards, which add a touch of greenery to the otherwise barren landscape.

Permits and Regulations

Restricted Area Permit:

Upper Mustang is a restricted area, and trekkers must obtain a special permit. Himalayanwalkers will organize all necessary permits prior to Trek starts.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Upper Mustang is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons. During these months, the weather is stable, and the skies are clear, offering stunning views of the mountains and landscapes. The Tiji Festival in May is an added bonus for cultural enthusiasts.

Difficulty Level

The Upper Mustang Tour is considered moderate in difficulty. Visitors often have the opportunity to observe prayer ceremonies, gaining insight into the living traditions that sustain the spiritual fabric of the Mustang Kingdom.

Beyond the monasteries, the exploration extends to the surrounding viewpoints and outskirts of Lo Manthang, where sweeping vistas of the Tibetan plateau-like landscape unfold. The stark beauty of the desert terrain, combined with the snow-capped Himalayan horizon, creates a powerful contrast that enhances the sense of isolation and sacredness.

Throughout the day, encounters with local villagers, artisans, and monks provide a deeper understanding of life in this remote kingdom. Traditional crafts, ancient storytelling, and the practice of Tibetan medicine still play an important role in the community, preserving knowledge passed down through generations.

The exploration day in Lo Manthang is not just sightseeing—it is an intimate cultural and spiritual journey. It allows visitors to connect with a centuries-old civilization that continues to thrive in harmony with its environment, offering a rare glimpse into a world where history, spirituality, and daily life remain beautifully intertwined.

Explore Jhong Caves and Monasteries

The exploration day at Jhong Caves and nearby monasteries offers a fascinating journey into the ancient spiritual and archaeological heritage of the Mustang region. Located in the dramatic cliffs above the Kali Gandaki Valley, the Jhong Cave complex consists of a series of man-made and natural cave dwellings believed to have been used for meditation, shelter, and possibly as early settlement spaces dating back centuries.

The day begins with a scenic approach through the rugged Himalayan landscape, where barren hills, wind-carved cliffs, and expansive valley views set a striking backdrop. As we ascend toward the caves, the environment becomes increasingly silent and contemplative, creating a sense of stepping into a forgotten world.

Upon reaching the Jhong Caves, visitors explore interconnected chambers carved into the cliffside at varying heights. These caves reveal fascinating insights into ancient Himalayan life, with some spaces believed to have been used by early Buddhist monks for meditation and spiritual retreat. Narrow passages, wooden ladders, and stone-carved rooms highlight the ingenuity of early inhabitants who adapted to this harsh environment.

The exploration continues with visits to nearby monasteries that serve as important spiritual centers for the local community. These monasteries are adorned with traditional Buddhist murals, prayer wheels, and sacred statues that reflect centuries of devotion and artistic tradition. The sound of chanting monks and the gentle flutter of prayer flags create a deeply peaceful and reflective atmosphere.

Throughout the day, the combination of archaeological wonder and living spiritual practice offers a unique perspective on the region’s cultural continuity. The contrast between the ancient cave dwellings and active monasteries illustrates how history and faith remain closely intertwined in Mustang.

As the day concludes, the descent back through the valley provides time for quiet reflection, with panoramic views of the surrounding cliffs and mountains. The exploration of Jhong Caves and monasteries is not only a journey through remarkable landscapes but also an encounter with the enduring spiritual heritage of the Himalayas.

Drive from Lo Manthang to Pokhara (820m), 7-8 hours

The journey from Lo Manthang to Pokhara is a gradual transition from the remote, windswept desert landscapes of Upper Mustang back toward the lush green valleys and vibrant life of central Nepal. It is both a physical return and a reflective passage through contrasting Himalayan environments, cultures, and elevations.

Leaving the walled city of Lo Manthang, the route initially retraces the rugged trails across the high plateau of Upper Mustang. The early part of the journey passes through familiar villages such as Tsarang and Ghami, where ancient monasteries, chortens, and long mani walls line the trail. The vast, arid terrain—shaped by wind and time—continues to dominate the scenery, with dramatic cliffs and canyon-like valleys stretching under an expansive sky. Each stop along the way offers a final opportunity to absorb the silence and spiritual stillness of this hidden kingdom.

As the descent continues, the landscape slowly begins to soften. The barren hills gradually give way to scattered vegetation, and the air becomes warmer as the altitude decreases. Passing through Samar and Chele, travelers once again encounter terraced fields and small settlements that reflect the resilient lifestyle of the Mustang people. The once stark desert-like environment begins to blend with hints of greenery, signaling the return toward lower Himalayan regions.

Reaching Kagbeni, the gateway between Upper Mustang and Lower Mustang, marks a symbolic transition point. Here, the confluence of the Kali Gandaki River and traditional stone-built village architecture create a striking contrast between ancient culture and flowing natural landscapes. Kagbeni often serves as a resting point, where travelers can reflect on the journey through the restricted kingdom of Lo before continuing southward.

From Kagbeni, the route continues toward Jomsom, the administrative hub of the region. The landscape becomes more dynamic, with stronger river valleys, wider roads, and increasing signs of modern connectivity. Jomsom, situated in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, is known for its strong winds and dramatic mountain scenery. Depending on the itinerary, travelers may either drive or take a short scenic flight from Jomsom to Pokhara, offering breathtaking aerial views of the Kali Gandaki gorge, snowcapped peaks, and deep river valleys.

As the journey moves toward Pokhara, the transformation becomes even more striking. The harsh, arid Mustang landscape is replaced by lush forests, cascading waterfalls, and fertile hills. The descent into Pokhara Valley feels like entering a different world entirely—calm lakes, green hills, and a relaxed atmosphere contrasting sharply with the high-altitude austerity left behind.

Arriving in Pokhara, Nepal’s lake city, provides a well-earned moment of rest and reflection. The serene waters of Phewa Lake, the reflection of the Annapurna range, and the vibrant yet peaceful ambiance of the city offer a perfect setting to unwind after the demanding yet enriching journey from Lo Manthang.

The return from Lo Manthang to Pokhara is more than just a transfer between destinations; it is a passage through shifting worlds.
