Overview

The Upper Mustang Trek takes you into one of Nepal’s most remote and culturally rich regions, offering an adventure unlike any other. Located in the trans-Himalayan area of Nepal, Upper Mustang was once a restricted region due to its proximity to the Tibetan border, but it has gradually opened to trekkers, while still retaining its rich cultural heritage and isolation. This trek offers an incredible blend of dramatic landscapes, ancient Tibetan Buddhist culture, and a sense of stepping back in time.

Upper Mustang is basically upper northern part of Mustang district which occupies two third of Mustang to northern area bordered with Tibet. The history of Mustang is amazing since it was an independent kingdom, also called Lo, until it fell to Gorkha Empire (later Kathmandu) in 1795. As per archeological evidence, there are only two geographical locations which have continuous civilization for the last two thousand years. The 55 caves found in Mustang depicting the life of Buddha and current Lo Manthang palace existing since the last several centuries provide sufficient evidence to such claim.

Lying in the rain shadow of Mt. Annapurna and Mt. Dhaulagiri, the region best invites its visitors during rainy season in Nepal. The region is typically known for its desert beauty and harsh, cliff faced landscapes. Since this remote Trans Himalayan Mountain area is bordered with Tibet, it has a distinct Tibetan feel both in its people and culture while lower part of Mustang has an amalgamation of both Tibetan and Nepalese culture. Upper Mustang is one of the most protected areas in the world and hence has been declared a restricted zone to preserve its organic culture and landscapes by the government of Nepal. Hiking through the trails of Upper Mustang means not only to enjoy and explore a hidden treasure on earth but also exploring many centuries’ old ancient civilizational cultures and many more.

The trip literally starts with your arrival in Kathmandu followed by next day’s Kathmandu valley’s major UNESCO World Heritage Sites and subsequent day’s drive to Pokhara. While staying overnight at beautiful lake city of Pokhara, we will catch an early flight to Jomsom next morning and trek down to Kagbeni, a gateway to Upper Mustang. Completing our security formalities, we will walk through stark landscape in the rain shadow of Dhaulagiri Massif to Lo Manthang, the capital of kingdom of Lo. We will explore an archeological and cultural sites such as caves, paintings, monasteries and gombas.

The trip will become much more exciting when you see a panoramic views of majestic peaks of Nilgiri, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri Himalayas. We also will visit Namgyal Gomba, Tinkhar, Amchi Museum (Traditional Tibetan doctor for ancient healing) within the periphery of Lo Manthang. A few hours walk will take us to Lo Gyakar Gomba/Ghar Gomba which was built in 8th century by Guru Padmasabhv. This Gomba is also featured for its rock paintings.

The trail itself has many religious landmarks including Chortens, Mani walls, ruins of ancient palace and many more. After exploring beautiful and mysterious Lo-Manthang, we will start trekking back through Dhakmar, Ghiling, Chuksang to Jomsom and thereby flying to Pokhara. And obviously we will not miss any single pristine scenery while walking back via these village route. Next day will be more relaxing & chilling in a lake city while making a tour of Pokhara valley’s most attractive tourist destinations. Then we will fly back to Kathmandu where your entire trip comes to memorable ending when our office will host a cultural farewell dinner.

Why Choose the Upper Mustang Trek?

Unique Landscape:

Unlike the lush green valleys of other Himalayan treks, Upper Mustang features a stark, desert-like landscape reminiscent of the Tibetan Plateau. The region is characterized by barren cliffs, eroded canyons, and wind-swept valleys, creating a surreal and otherworldly atmosphere.

Rich Cultural Heritage:

Upper Mustang is deeply influenced by Tibetan culture, as it lies close to the Tibet-Nepal border. The region is dotted with ancient monasteries, chortens (stupas), and mani walls (stone walls inscribed with Buddhist prayers), offering a fascinating insight into Tibetan Buddhism.

Less Crowded:

Due to its restricted area status (a special permit is required), Upper Mustang sees fewer trekkers compared to popular routes like Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit. This makes it an ideal destination for those seeking solitude and tranquility.

Historical Significance:

The region was once part of the ancient Salt Trade Route between Tibet and Nepal. The trek takes you through villages that have preserved their medieval charm, offering a glimpse into a bygone era.

Key Highlights of the Upper Mustang Trek

Lo Manthang – The Walled City:

The capital of Upper Mustang, Lo Manthang, is a fortified city surrounded by a massive wall. It is home to ancient monasteries, royal palaces, and traditional Tibetan-style houses. The city feels like stepping back in time.

Ancient Caves and Monasteries:

The region is famous for its mysterious caves, such as the Chhoser Cave and Luri Gompa, which are carved into cliffs and adorned with ancient Buddhist murals. Monasteries like Thubchen Gompa and Jampa Gompa are architectural marvels with rich religious significance.

Tiji Festival:

If you time your trek right (usually in May), you can witness the vibrant Tiji Festival, a three-day celebration of Tibetan Buddhist culture featuring masked dances, rituals, and music.

Stunning Mountain Views:

The trek offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, as well as the Nilgiri and Tilicho peaks. The contrast between the arid landscape and snow-capped peaks is mesmerizing.

Traditional Villages:

Villages like Kagbeni, Chele, and Ghami are steeped in history and culture. These settlements feature whitewashed houses, prayer flags, and terraced fields, providing a glimpse into the traditional lifestyle of the Mustangi people.

Despite the arid environment, the region is known for its fertile barley fields and apple orchards, which add a touch of greenery to the otherwise barren landscape.
